About Name Neighbours

What It Shows

Enter any name and this page finds its 10 closest "neighbours", i.e. the names most similar to it in the dataset. Below the list you'll also see a generational breakdown showing which generation the name belongs to most strongly, and the average age of people in England & Wales who currently bear that name.

How Distance is Calculated

Every name is described by around 55 measurements: when it was most popular, which era it peaked in, how many syllables it has, the sounds it's built from, etc. The distance between all of those meaurements is then calculated simulateously. The closer the distance, the more alike the names.

Opposite names are calculated slightly differently. Rather than finding the name furthest away in a straight line (which would always return the same small set of outliers regardless of the input), the algorithm finds the point directly on the other side of the dataset's centre from the name you searched. It does this by computing the average position of every name in the 55-dimensional space, then projecting through that centre point to find a reflected position. The name sitting closest to that reflected position is the opposite.

Game Tip

If you're stuck on today's Namle puzzle, try typing a name you think is close to the answer. The neighbours listed here might point you towards the target — and if one of them scores well when you guess it, you know you're in the right neighbourhood.
